Since 1 June 2022, nearly all Ukrainians taking refuge in Germany have the possibility to choose a new health insurer to provide for their health care. Likewise, family members (newly) living in Germany and registered here, as well as relatives without income of their own, e.g. children, can be co-insured free of charge at the same time.

What does a German health insurer do for me?

As a German health insurer, we assume the costs for all legally prescribed medical care services for you. The German legislator mandates that you make a statutory co-payment for this purpose in some cases. This applies to adults, for example, for medications, remedies or medical appliances, and for in-patient treatments in hospitals or preventive care centres.

This is how the family insurance works

Children living in Germany can be co-insured by one parent. This family insurance allows children to use statutory services and it is free of charge. You can download the application from our page on the family insurance. If you have any questions about this, call us (we speak German and English) at the number 0800 255 0800 or write us an email (you are welcome to do so in Ukrainian) to info@service.mobil-krankenkasse.de.

People from Ukraine taking refuge here, who are not capable of earning a living and who are in need of assistance in Germany (for example, seriously ill people) or who are older than 65 years, have a right to receive subsistence benefits from the welfare office. If you also fall into this group of people, please contact the city or municipal administration at your place of residence. You will get help there and you will also receive cover in the event of illness. Direct insurance through a health insurer is not possible.

From the age of 25 years, they have the possibility to get their own cover from the health insurer for students, “Krankenversicherung der Studierenden” (KVdS), and continue to receive all legally mandated benefits. General questions about health insurance in Germany for refugees from Ukraine:

Do you have an approved residence permit for Germany, but you are not an employee nor do you qualify as needing assistance, meaning you do not receive German unemployment benefits II or welfare benefits and you cannot get co-insurance under a family cover either? In that case, you have the possibility to get voluntary insurance from Mobil Krankenkasse so you will have cover in the event of illness. For this purpose, please complete a membership application. We will then review if the insurance can be provided. Important: This application must be filed within 6 months from the beginning of your stay in Germany.

There is no COVID-19 vaccination mandate in Germany. However, vaccination is recommended for everyone from the age of 5. Currently, three vaccinations are recommended for everyone without unusual prior illnesses. Four vaccinations are recommended for people with prior illnesses and one to three vaccinations depending on age are recommended for children. The state covers the costs for COVID-19 vaccinations in Germany. You can get your vaccination in many doctor’s offices near you.

It has been mandatory since 2020 in Germany that people who visit community facilities or who work in one must prove they are vaccinated against measles. This can be proven by a previous vaccination or an infection from which you have recovered (certificate from the doctor about antibodies is required). Community facilities are, for example, schools, nursery schools and child day care centres, hospitals, etc.

Sometimes it is easier speaking in person with each other. We are looking forward to your visit at our service points in Hamburg (near the central station), Munich (near S-train stop Hirschgarten), Celle (near bus stop Am Holzhof) and Neu-Isenburg (directly at the bus stop Gewerbegebiet-Ost).

Most health insurers in Germany offer so-called additional benefits beyond the statutory benefits. Mobil Krankenkasse offers these and many further additional benefits to you as an insured person:

  • Preventive dental care: We assume a proportionate share of the costs (at most up to EUR 40.00) per year for professional dental cleaning, which can be provided in nearly all dentist’s offices.
  • HPV vaccination: We assume the costs for the HPV vaccination for all children and youths aged 9 to 17 years. This verifiably lowers the risk for boys and girls of suffering from a cervical carcinoma if the vaccination is administered before their first sexual encounter.
  • Welcome Baby Benefit: We offer a particularly comprehensive package of additional benefits in a value of up to EUR 1,000.00 to pregnant women. You can find all information about this on the Welcome Baby Benefit website.
  • Assumption of costs for additional early detection exams by the paediatrician. The health of children and youths is a particular concern to us, which is why we also pay for three further preventive exams besides the legally prescribed exams.
  • Of course, we also cover all the prescribed benefits for preventive cancer care for adults.
